Agriculture

Agriculture plays a very important role in Rolette County’s economy. Most farm operations are diversified with crops and livestock. Rolette County has 356,814 acres of cropland, 85,000 acres of native pasture, 9,000 acres of tame pasture, and 27,000 acres of hayland.

Crops

The major crops in Rolette County are spring wheat, durum, barley and canola. Spring wheat and durum used to make up a majority of the planted acres, but due to weather related disease problems, canola production is rapidly on the increase. Some of the lesser grown crops in Rolette County are oats, sunflowers, alfalfa, soybeans, corn, rye, and winter wheat.

Livestock

Beef producers in Rolette County are mainly commercial cow/calf operations. Most of the calves are weaned in the fall and then backgrounded until after the first of the year. There is a large abundance of feed barley in the county that is used to grow these calves. There are also several seed stock producers that produce outstanding Black Angus, Red Angus, Gelbvieh, Charolais, and Simmental bulls and heifers.

Rolete County has several PMU ranches with some of these ranches being second or third generation horse breeders. PMU (pregnant mare urine) is the key source of hormones used to prevent and treat osteoporosis and to help relieve the short-term symptoms of menopause. PMU ranches use both saddle and draft horses. The Quarter Horse being the most common saddle horse and the Percheron and Belgian the most common draft horse. The foals are either sold at public auction or private treaty.
