Election General Information

The County Auditor is the local election official for state wide and county elections. The Secretary of State is the election official for the State of North Dakota and oversees the County Auditor in the conduct of elections. The County Commission is also responsible for some election functions such as appointing election inspectors and designating polling places.

To be a qualified voter in North Dakota you need to meet the following qualifications:

  1. Must be a citizen of the United States
  2. Must be at least eighteen years old
  3. Must be a resident of North Dakota
  4. Must have resided in the precinct at least thirty days next preceding any election

If a resident who otherwise meets the qualifications for voting in North Dakota moves from one precinct to another within thirty days preceding any election they are still qualified electors of the precinct they moved from.

North Dakota does not have voter registration, however, when you show up at the polls you may be challenged and be required to complete a voter affidavit certifying that you meet the qualifications to vote in that precinct.
